What is Dress to Impress?

Dress to Impress is a Roblox game developed in 2023. It is highly successful for being a fun and simple dress up game with semi-realistic aspects.

I first started playing Dress to Impress(DTI) around Feburary 2024 and immediately fell in love.

The Need for Dress to Impress

There had been a lack of quality girl games on Roblox since the major decline of Royale High. The community was toxic and the game was not getting updated so often. Royale High also centred around dress-up aspects as part of the draw to the game.

Dress to Impress was not the first of its kind on the platform. Fashion Famous was a popular predecessor to both Royale High and Dress to Impress but was also not being updated and it was heavily pay to win.

All this left a perfect gap in the market for a game to swoop hundreds of thousands of players and potentially make a lot of money.

The game blended real life fashion with a simple and easy to play game.

The Beginning of Dress to Impress.

Dress to Impress officially went public on the Roblox platform in October 2023 and immediately gained traction. The first immediate draw to the game is the "art style", if you can call it that.

The graphics are rather intense for a Roblox game and all the items are extremely detailed.

The game launched with a limited selection of items to wear and a VIP section for 800 robux.

The first big Update

The update that put DTI onto the front page in my opinion had to be the 2024 Valentine's Day update. We got:

• A new runway
• 8 new free items and 5 VIP only ones.
• The Trend-Setter dress
• UI changes
• Duos
• 8 new hairs
• 25 new poses

This is the update that introduced most of the core features that DTI still has today. Other updates like The Hunt, The Classic and the currency update were significant but they mostly just added to the systems DTI already has.

Brat and Summer

Summer Update was introduced on June 29th 2024 and introduced 45 NEW ITEMS!!! It also introduced code items, and the game officially reached 1 Billion visits.

I spent most of my time playing this summer update but the update that truly hooked me was the brat update.

BRAT x DTI

Charli XCX officially collaborated with DTI to release exclusive brat items in promotion for her album 'brat' which was highly successful.

This update introduced a theme voting system I really wished stuck around, special brat themes and a brat runway.

In my opinion, this was one of DTI's best updates and many of the items introduced in this update I still use regularly to this day.

The cancelling of Gigi

This was my first big drama with the DTI community. Gigi, the lead developer of the game up until this point had been exposed for mistreatment, fat-shaming and exploiting underaged developers. Her hiatus stands until this day (17/07/2025) and Umoyae had taken over her spot.

Up until this point I don't remember the DTI community really being extremely problematic, but it all seemed to spiral out of control from here.

The Halloween Update

We recieved many new items and a Halloween quest, which quickly becamea staple in every single update going forward. It had 3 parts and was actually quite challenging. At the end of the quest you'd recieve some special limited edition items.

This update was a classic. I personally loved this update and it really showed what the DTI developers were capable of.

The Petal Dress.

DTI released a special 3-hour limited edition dress which broke the community. People were basically breaking the Roblox servers to get this dress and in the end I don't think I've ever used it once.

The DTI discord was getting locked in every update forward and whenever there was major drama.

Christmas and New Years

The usual was released: clothes, new runway, quest. There was a special limited New Year's update, but in my opinion these updates weren't really noteworthy

Valentine's

Another goat of an update. We got many absolutely stunning items and a quest, but most notably the dressing rooms, which I will talk about later in my "this is very problematic" category

Old reworked items got added and new currency items were added.

Style Showdown

(My opinion) the WORST update to be released. This update included a new game mode, style showdown. It was one of the worst game modes I've ever played and I still haven't redeemed the rewards you got from this update.

Easter

Didn't play at all. I completely burned myself out of the game. Easter bunny set was added and valentines items were moved to a valentine's day chest (see more in the "this is very problematic")

Spring

This update introduced an accessory adjustment feature along with walk packs, currency sets and obviously items.

World Day of Cultural Diversity

This update celebrated different cultures this world has to offer.

Summer

The second summer update launched around the same time I returned back to DTI and fixed many issues regarding bugs, the dressing rooms, the actual map and added new items to the game. The summer quest had been delayed.

This is problematic

Dressing Rooms

Dressing rooms were a way of storing your code, quest rewards, currency and robux items.

I feel most of the issues regarding the dressing rooms have to do with their locations. We only walk so fast without the fast walking gamepass and therefore if you were on the other side of the map you had to walk back to the dressing rooms if you forgot an item.

The dressing rooms are cluttered and have a lot of bugs like not being able to get out if you are wearing certain items and also items straight up disappearing from your dressing room.

Overall their addition to DTI was controversial and dressing rooms are widely disliked by the community.

My thoughts are that they're okay. I have the fast walking gamepass so their locations don't really bother me but I can understand why they would if you didn't have it.

Clothing Chests

Clothing chests were added to the game to keep all the seasonal items together. These chests were also in an awkward location and most of the time players forgot about the items in these chests because they were practially hidden away. I don't actually remember using them at all during the time they were in the game.

I can totally understand the hatred for these and they added thse items into the dressing rooms, which was a much better fix and quite honestly easier.

Removing items

Items get removed quite regularly from DTI and I find that it is highly annoying. From my dabble into game development, I know for a fact most items are simple 3D models that get applied to your character. There's nothing high tech or extremely complicated about that.

I get quite frustrated every time the developers remove items, especially during the summer-halloween updates last year. We had only about 30 items in VIP and they started removing items to "rework" them.

I just don't understand why you have to take the old 3D model away when you can just swap them when your rework is ready.

VIP price reduction

I was already checked out of the community when the VIP price got reduced from 800 robux to 579 robux but I think they finally realised that they didn't have enough items/benfits to justify the high pice. I bought VIP when it was 800 robux and I quite honestly felt ripped off. I did use those items but it just wasn't worth it.

The Community

The developers of DTI seem to get bullied by the community. DTI has a really problematic and toxic community but most of the animosity gets directed towards the developers for updates they asked for.

A recent example is the fair voting update. Players had been begging for ages for fair voting but when it gets implemented in the game then it's "punishing them" and "what if everybody's outfit deserved 1 star".

I'm quite honestly pissed off at the DTI community and I feel sorry for the developers because they're damned if they do and damned if they dont.

Gamepasses

Gamepasses are so pricey in this game and in my opinion, not worth it. Now that I've bought them they do make the game experience better (eg. custom makeup) but for what they are charging it just doesn't seem worth it. Custom Makeup is literally free in Royale High and RH really wants to make their money, yknow?

They need to check themselves for any future gamepasses they want to release.

Adults vs. Literal Children

Dress to Impress has a really appealing game concept and I can understand why adults would want to play DTI. As an older teen myself, it is annoying playing in the regular servers with all the kids who don't really want to try and understand the game, but we also have to acknowlegde that Roblox is a platform for kids.

This is why the rise of adult only DTI servers has become a controversial topic, because literal adults get mad when they play a kids game and the kids act...well like kids.

This isn't so much of a DTI problem as it is a Roblox problem but it's important to acknowledge. Roblox, and subsequently DTI, are trying to appeal to all audiences. DTI has to be "mature" enough for adults so it doesn't seem like a kids game but not too mature that it influences the younger kids and alarms parents.

It's really a sticky and delicate situation. Roblox has forced themselves and their developers into this boat where they need to try and appeal to kids, young teens, older teens, and adults. All these groups mixed together...well, here's the score:

Roblox has a pedophile problem.

As much as DTI cannot control who plays their game, they can control how players play the game, by not implementing inappropriate items they're stopping the predators from actually doing anything inappropriate, this pisses off the adults who want realistic and certain stylistic choice outfits that are just too inappropriate for kids. (eg. the skirt with the straps that actually looks like underwear😳)

Conclusion

Dress to Impress is honestly in a sticky situation just like Royale High is. It's playerbase is both young and old and contraversy arises. I discuss more about Roblox as a dating platform in my thoughts tab, so you can go check it out there.

Alex Turner is a British singer and guitarist in Arctic Monkeys, a famous rock band, and The Last Shadow Puppets, a supergroup he formed with Miles Kane, James Ford and Zach Dawes.

Who the Fuck are Arctic Monkeys?

Also the name of a EP, Arctic Monkeys are a British band formed in Sheffield in 2002. Comprised of Alex Turner (Vocals and Guitar), Matt Helders (Drums), Jamie Cook (Guitarist) and Nick O'Malley (Bass)

Arctic Monkeys were one of the first bands to popularise their music using the internet. This gained serious publicity for being something new and innovative. It drew hoards of attention towards the up-and-coming band.

In 2006, Arctic Monkeys released their first album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not." which topped the UK Album Charts on release and became the fastest selling debut album in British history. On it's first day, selling 118,501 copies. WPSIAM is Arctic Monkeys first dabble into their hard rock sound. Many fell in love with this sound, including me.

Following their debut album, they released an EP on the 24th of April 2006 called "Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?" which is also the title for this section! (lol)

In 2007, the band released their second album, "Favourite Worst Nightmare" which was well received by critics and contained the popular songs "505" and "Flourescent Adolescent"

Followed by a brief break, where Alex toured and recorded an album, "The Age of the Understatement" with TSLP, Arctic Monkeys returned. Humbug, their third album, would be released and chart immediately at #1. Humbug expands on that hard rock sound the band had been chiselling away at for 2 albums now. To me, Humbug is a solid album, it is creative within it's sound and doesn't sound like anything else inside of the rock genre.

Following Humbug, Suck It And See would be released. Humbug and SIAS would not be as well percieved by critics as FWN and WPSIAM, but still overall being positively percieved.

Arctic Monkeys got proppeled into international stardom with the release of AM. AM was released 9 September 2013. Critics loved the album, and many said that AM is their best record, ever. My own personal opinion is that yeah, this is the best record of their career. Most of the most popular songs from Arctic Monkeys were from AM, and many got a second life with the popularity of TikTok making the songs popular again.

Many consider Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino to be a major step down from AM. It departed from their rock sound, being based on a piano Alex had been gifted for his 30th birthday. As Arctic Monkeys had always been percieved as a Rock band, the departure from hard rock to jazz and piano was not very well percieved. However, it still did relatively well, still charting at #1 in the UK.

Their 7th and their last released album is The Car. The Car follows in many of the footsteps of TBHC. It's a much softer, more mellow album. My favourite AM song ever is "Body Paint", coming from this album. To me, it shows the shift in mindset that the band has experienced through the years. A lot of fans are pissed off by their departure from their rock sound, but my take on it is that do you really expect a band to play the same songs they've written when they were 17 years old to stay the same? Alex especially has proved himself as a poetic and heartfelt writer, and forcing him to make an album based on how he felt 18 years ago is torture.

Who the Fuck are The Last Shadow Puppets?

The Last Shadow Puppets(TSLP) are a supergroup comprised of: Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Miles Kane (The Little Flames, The Rascals), James Ford (Simian, Simian Mobile Disco) and Zach Dawes (Mini Mansions)

The band was formed when Alex and Miles became friends on Arctic Monkey's 2005 tour, Miles played guitar at the end of 505 and at Arctic Monkeys 2007 and 2013 apperances at Glastonbury

The Age of the Understatement would be released on 14 April 2008, skyrocketing to #1 on the UK Albums Chart. Their first show was inside the Lock Tavern in Camden, London.

The release of this album was followed by a lengthy hiatus from 2009-2015. All the band members were working on seperate projects, yet finally came together in 2016 to release Everything You've Come to Expect. This was released on 1 April 2016, then followed by another hiatus to this day.

For me, their first album was quite unique. It isn't something I listen to regularly, but I find a lot of TSLP's works I have to be in the mood for to appreciate. I find that is the same with Arctic Monkeys. I am a diehard fan of TBHC but I don't listen to it everyday - hey, I don't listen to it most days, but those days where I can truly appreciate it, and alongside with TSLP's works is just magnificent.

AM and TSLP are my favourite bands alongside Maneskin. There is just something we do not get in music anymore embedded in this kind of rock. This special sound that Alex and Miles have somehow perfected within their own bands. It is quite refreshing.

Who the Fuck is Alex Turner?

Alex Turner, oh my where do I start?

Born on January 6th, 1986, he is famous for being the frontman of Arctic Monkeys and his side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. His style has seen many eras, especially when he was younger, opting for skinny jeans and hoodies(FWN and Humbug) to suits(TBHC, The Car) and even leather jackets and slicked back hair. (AM)

He is known for being introspective and witty, alongside some mysteriousness and being an introvert. He is seen mostly as a confident and smooth rockstar, but his lyrics reflect a very passionate and a vulnerable personality. He has an air of melancholy around him, especially reflected through many of Arctic Monkeys earlier works, and on AM, which he said was a "breakup album."

Personally, I connect most with his lyrics. I really love how he uses metaphors and different ways of expressing his feelings so it's not a cliche. He never said "I love you" in one of his songs. like WHAT????? Imagine being so good at making lyrics you don't even need to say "I love you" being poetic like he is, oh man, I get humbled every time. He's very talented with words.

Also, let's face it - I have a major crush on him lol😭 My favourite era is definitely humbug, Kanye said "fuck lesbian alex turner" dont ask me twice mate!

Alex Turner being one of the most poetic, beautiful and smart musicians ever has made me have a crush on him. groundbreaking, i know.
